Saying goodbye

April was a very tough month for us. On April 5th, the day after Easter, Gene's lifelong childhood friend, Bruce Marcum, passed on. Luckily, we had been to Huntington just 2 weeks prior to visit Gene's mother, Birdie, and we visited with Bruce and Cindy twice while we were there. We had no idea that when we parted it would be for the last time. We returned to Huntington for the funeral services and the military funeral ceremony was fitting and moving. During that time we stayed with Birdie again and had a good visit with her as well.

Little did we know that the following Sunday, April 18th, after returning home that we would be called back to Huntington when Birdie had collapsed in her apartment and was taken to the hospital. We made it to the hospital and were with her when she passed peacefully, although she never regained consciousness. Birdie was loved by many people in her community in addition to our family and we will miss her dearly.
